Balai Penelitian Tanaman Kacang dan Umbi (Balitkabi) or Indonesian Legumes and Tuber Crops Research Institute (ILETRI) is one of the Technical Implementation Units (UPT) of Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Research and Development (IAARD) who has the task to study a variety of legumes and tuber crops. The research conducted is on the disciplines of plant morphology and physiology, ecology, entomology, and phytopathology. Its activities include ecophysiology research, plant breeding, pests and diseases control, seeding and germplasm utilization of various legumes and tubers, as well as research on farming system technology component and yield management of various legumes and tuber crops.
The main commodities which become the mandates and the activities of ILETRI are: soybeans, peanuts, mung beans, cassava, and sweetpotatoes. In addition, ILETRI also gives considerable attention to the development of various commodities of potential legumes such as cowpeas, pigeon peas, lablabs, lentils, and various potential tubers such as arrowroots, cannas, taros, and caladiums.
Since 2014, ILETRI has been officially stated as Research Center of Excellence or Pusat Unggulan Iptek (PUI) by the Research and Technology Ministry of Higher Education, with the Decree of Research and Technology Minister Number 48 / M / Kp / XII / 2014 dated December 16, 2014. At present, along with 45 other PUI (including PUI at University), ILETRI develops science and technology in Indonesia through research and development in its field.
ILETRI office is located in Malang, with five experimental stations in Genteng (Banyuwangi), Muneng (Probolinggo), Kendalpayak (Malang) and Jambegede (Malang), as well as Ngale (Ngawi).
